Avocados like loose, rich, well draining soil. Blend any planting mix or potting soil into the dirt you take out of the hole prior to planting, and when placed back into the ground around the root ball, soil drainage and fertility will be improved. Avoid any manure based mix, as these have a tendency to be too salty.
Water well after planting, and then water such that the soil stays consistently moist, not soggy or dry. It is o.k. for the soil to be moist all the time, just not squishy soggy.
