Forest Flame Pieris (Lily of the Valley)may be a plant to consider if you need to 'jazz' up a shady garden bed, and you have already exhausted the design contributions of rhodies, azaleas, ferns or gardenias. The soft foliage with colors of red to pinkish-white and then back to green offers some nice visual interest, even more pretty in the spring when the profuse display of white flower clusters begin to emerge. Pieris do like loose rich soil and afternoon shade. Consider in containers as an accent plant around entryways of very tall buildings where sun can be limited. Pieris grow slowly to about 6 to 10 feet but can easily be clipped shorter. Hardy to USDA zone 5 and all higher zones, and is shipped potted in soil for best possible results when planted in yard or garden.
