Clifton's Nursery is expanding its wine grape selections, now offering Merlot grape vines, a variety hardy to USDA zone 7, so a varietal that can be planted in many areas of the country. As with all grape vines, give your new Merlot vine plenty of room to spread and lots of full sun, but not really extreme heat. You will harvest your fruit September to early October, so have your wine press ready. Berries are medium sized, round, bluish black in color and will transform into a wine that is "softer and more supple in texture and one that ages more rapidly that those of Cabernet Sauvignon (UC California)." Spur or cane pruning. Your Merlot grape will ship in its original soil and container for best possible results when planted in yard or garden.
