Give Acer japonicum “O’isami" a second look if you are fond of some of the more unusual varieties of Japanese maple. You will first notice its larger leaves, which give this shade garden standout a little different look. The “O’isami”, like all Japanese Maples prefers at least partial shade, and soil that is rich and well drained. It grows a bit slower, offering a more airy, open canopy with an overall rounded shape. Plant as an accent in any shade garden, and it will treat you to brilliant autumn leaf color of scarlet, gold, yellow and orange mixed with green. Though it is listed as reaching 30 feet, its slow growth combined with Japanese maple’s ability to be clipped will give you many design possibilities in smaller planter beds. This Acer variety is hardy to USDA zone 5, so a worthwhile choice for many in colder locations. The Acer O isami would be an excellent container plant on shady porch or patio. Shipped as a potted two gallon specimen to ensure a healthier start when planted in yard or garden.
