Hibiscus "Collie Mullens", also known as one of the Rose of Sharon varieties will treat you to a splash of tropical color with much less worry of cold, hardy to USDA zone 5 and higher. Yes, it goes dormant, but the few months it is without leaves in the winter a small price to pay for such a continuous show of beauty spring into fall. The Collie Mullens has large flowers rose pink in color. As a topiary, consider in a large pot and then accent with seasonal color. Plant this hibiscus in very hot areas, as reflected heat never an issue with the deciduous types, so that hot western wall or fence can have good color with little worry on your part. The Rose of Sharon Hibiscus do attract hummingbirds and do well in beach or seacoast exposure. Clip to maintain topiary size and shape.
