For those who live outside of the 'typical' cherry growing area, do not despair, as new varieties are coming to market that will put fresh, home grown cherries right into your own backyard. Brooks cherry is a newer introduction, and one that needs only 400 hours to fruit, about half the chilling needed for some of the more well known varieties like Bing. Meat from your Brooks is large and dark red, with flavor that is described from one source as "sweet, rich and well balanced." Your fruit will be firm and crisp, so no worry about a squishy juicy mess in your fruit bowl. Plant the Brooks with Tulare cherry, another variety with an equally low chilling requirement for pollination, with each tree aiding the other. Your new cherry tree will ship potted in soil for best possible results when planted in yard or orchard, tree pruned to a bit over three feet tall for a stronger start.
