Black bamboo adds an exotic, oriental look to the landscape, a most unique bamboo variety. Black bamboo is fast-growing, upright green culms turn black in their second season, contrasting nicely with rich green foliage. Evergreen. Full to partial sun. Fast growth to 4 to 8 feet tall, if controlled, 15 to 20 feet tall otherwise, clumps to 6 to 10 feet wide. This bamboo is a running type, so it is suggested to use in container where the plant can be controlled. Very effective near swimming pools, on porch or patio, or incorporated into an Oriental style landscape. Use where the classy look of the black canes can be appreciated. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Hardy to USDA zone 5 and all higher zones.
